How to Work Out With a Toddler (or Baby) in the Room

Keep it short and floor-based, keep heavy weights out of reach, and let the kid join instead of fighting it: they can climb under your plank, sit on your lap for band rows, or ride along on squats once they can hold on. Use a timer that pauses, and restart the round when they need you.

Pick the right workout

Short and on the floor. A 10 minute bodyweight or band session works best, because you can stop and start it without losing much. The 10 min band strength and 10 min legs and core routines both fit. More on the 10 minute workouts and band workouts pages.

Let them join: 5 kid-in moves

  1. Plank tunnel: hold a plank while they crawl under you. 20 to 30 seconds.
  2. Lap band rows: sit on the floor, kid on your lap, band around your feet, row. 10 to 15 reps.
  3. Squat ride: once they can hold on, they sit on your hip or hold your neck while you do slow squats. 8 to 10 reps.
  4. Bridge with a passenger: lie on your back, kid sitting on your hips, lift your hips. 10 to 15 reps.
  5. Push-up kiss: baby on a mat under your face, kiss on every rep. 5 to 10 reps.

Safety rules for baby-as-weight

  • Wait until they have solid head control.
  • Keep them low and close to your body. Never overhead with a young infant.
  • Go slow. No swinging, no fast lowering.
  • If you're unsure whether your kid is ready, ask your pediatrician.

Keep the weights where little fingers can't reach

Dumbbells and kettlebells on the floor are a real hazard for a toddler. They pinch fingers and they tip. Keep them on a stand or shelf they can't reach, or in a closed room. If they're awake and loose in the room, stick to bands and bodyweight. Short on space? The small-space home gym under $300 keeps the gear list small.

When it falls apart

It will. Pause the timer, deal with the snack or the diaper, and restart the round you were on. If the session ends at minute 4, it ends at minute 4. Try again tomorrow, or wait for nap and do the quiet no-jumping workout. Pick something new any time from the homepage.

Quick answers

How do I work out when my toddler won't leave me alone?

Let them in on it. Give them a job like counting your squats or crawling under your plank. Pick a 10 minute floor routine and expect to pause.

Can I use my baby as the weight?

Only once they have solid head control, and only slow, low moves held close to your chest, like squats or glute bridges with baby on your hips. Never overhead with a young infant. Ask your pediatrician if you are unsure.

What moves are safe with a toddler crawling around?

Bodyweight and band moves. Skip dumbbells and kettlebells while they're loose in the room, because a dropped 20 lb weight and small toes don't mix.

Should I just wait for nap time?

Nap time is easier if you get it. If naps are short or you need that time for yourself, a 10 minute session with them awake still counts.

How do I keep a toddler busy for 10 minutes?

Give them a new toy or a snack they only get during your workout, or let them copy you. Plenty of toddlers love doing their own "squats".
